Abstract: This paper presents concepts and software tools to promote the al- ternation of competitive and collaborative actvities applied to the teaching of Chess. A survey on the literature of Computers in Education reveals that there are few efforts concerning the coordinated alternation of phases in learning ac- tivities, so in this work are discussed concepts of collaboration and competition, and it is claimed that this alternation is of pedagogical interest. The actors of each phase and their correspondent roles are identified, together with the neces- sary software support tools. The prototype of an automatic heuristic comparison tool is briefly presented and at the end of the paper some conclusions and further works are proposed.
