WikiLOR: a Collaborative Approach for Improving Learning Object Metadata

The quality of metadata in learning object repositories is frequently low; metadata records are incomplete, not accurate, out of date, etc. This paper introduces a collaborative, metadata editing approach in order to improve metadata quality by the community effort. WikiLOR is a wiki that acts as both: a learning object repository and a collaborative metadata editor. WikiLOR propose a wiki-way for editing both learning object content and metadata. WikiLOR also supports the collaboration through encouraging the collaborative edition, promoting discussions, helping conflict resolution and with version management. The paper also details an experiment that reveals the qualities of WikiLOR and compares it to other benchmark applications.
