Abstract: The objective of the research presented in this article is to reduce confusion in a chat conversation, the main problem identified regarding the use of this tool for holding debates in distance learning courses. This issue is analyzed using a Groupware Engineering approach, with an investigation of problems related to communication, coordination and cooperation that lead to confusion during the conversation. A number of successive versions of the Mediated Chat tool have been developed as part of this research project in order to produce enhanced versions through which a chat conversation, designed for educational debates, can be better understood.
